10 Workplace Hazards More Dangerous than Sharks

What if I told you that you were more likely to injure yourself at work than if you dove into shark-infested waters? In honor of one of the most important weeks of the year (Shark Week), we want to alert you of ten workplace hazards to avoid that occur more frequently than shark attacks. If you don’t take precaution you could become the next victim of a third-degree coffee spill or a protrusive file cabinet attack.

  1. Vending Machines – Although many may not see this coin-operated snack box as a threat, the numbers say otherwise. A 2011 Freakonomics article cites that “the yearly risk of dying from a shark attack is roughly one in 250 million. In contrast, the yearly risk of dying from a vending machine accident is roughly one in 112 million. The margin may be slim, but these very heavy machines are workplace mainstays. So, the next time you enter the break room, be cautious, lest you become the snack.

  3. Sick Co-Workers – Just as swimming with sharks isn’t recommended, no one wants to be working alongside the unwell. So if you’re sick, stay home. A CareerBuilder survey estimated more than 70 percent of ill employees go into work anyway, thereby risking the health of those around them. Don’t test the waters – stay in bed.

Such Great Heights – You’re reaching for something on the top shelf, and somehow, the stepladder disappears from under your feet, and all you hear is, “Hey, man, how’s it hangin’?” Although the wisecrack may sound innocent, its source material is no laughing matter; in fact, the University of Illinois at Chicago reported that falling accounts for the greatest number of disabling injuries. In fact, the rate of office workers falling is two and a half times the rate for the unemployed. Not so funny when the joke falls on you…literally.

  6. Heavy Lifting – Whoever said office jobs didn’t involve heavy lifting never had to organize multiple boxes of computer paper. Remember: Bend at your knees, not at your waist. Otherwise, back pain could rear its ugly head – some of it irreversible – so remember this safe-lifting tip and carry on. Pun intended.
  7. Rolling Chairs – According to The Dodo,falls involving chairs caused more than 2,000 deaths between 1999 and 2010. (I wonder how many of those deaths were caused from people using their rolling chairs as ladders. It seems like a good idea until the wheels decide to follow the laws of physics.)

  9. Coffee Spills – We’re not just talking irritating stains, but scalding burns that sear your skin (not to mention the disappointment of wasting a perfectly brewed cup). Fair warning to the caffeinated: When rounding corners at work, slow down, because coffee in the cup is like blood in the water: asking for it.
  10. Protruding File Cabinets – It’s no shark bite, but unexpectedly walking into an open file drawer can leave quite the gash. So, pay attention – and don’t text and walk – because you never know when a drawer could be lurking around the corner. (Cue John Williams’ Jaws theme.)

  12. Getting Caught in Objects – Ever got your hair caught in the printer? Neither have I (yet), but it sounds painful enough to mention.

  14. Monitor Staring – We actually have a bona fide solution for this situation. Staring at a bright screen all day can leave your eyes dry and tired. To remedy this, every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This will relieve your strained peepers and restore your focus.

  16. Air Fresheners – Per The Dodo, 1996 closed with 2,600 room-freshener injuries .That same year, only 13 people were attacked by sharks. What’s really more dangerous?

 

Now that you know how dangerous the workplace can be, the next time someone screams “Shark!” at the beach; you’ll have little to fear. After facing the gaping jaws of a swivel chair, an ocean predator will be the least of your concerns.

What Substance Abuse in the Workplace Costs Employers

Of the estimated 14.8 million Americans who use illegal drugs, 70% of them are employed, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Therefore, odds are your company employs workers who fall into this group. The use of drugs or alcohol by employees inside or outside the office can be costly for a business, leading to:

  • increased turnover rate
  • workplace incidents
  • poor workplace morale

From a financial perspective, the National Institute on Drug Abuse found substance abusers cost employers twice as much in workers’ compensation and medical expenses. Additionally, substance abusers are five times more likely to file workers’ compensation claims.

Furthermore, employees with alcohol dependencies are nearly three times more likely to have injury-related absences, according to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. In 2015, that council reported that federal surveys indicate 24% of workers reported drinking on the job at least once in the past year.

Recognizing the signs

Knowing how to handle substance abuse in the workplace starts with recognizing the existence of a problem. Whether it is abuse of alcohol, prescription drugs or illegal substances, a number of visible signs can indicate an employee needs help:

  • change in appearance
  • frequent tardiness
  • decline in job performance
  • slurred speech and drowsiness
  • mood swings and irritability
  • scent of alcohol

None of these signs alone indicates a substance abuse issue, but intervening early with employees displaying a combination of these signs may be valuable to your business. Implementing a companywide policy, training managers to recognize signs of substance abuse, and setting expectations with employees through training can help safeguard your business and your workforce.

Podcasts provide the opportunity to sit like a fly on the wall and listen to some of the most brilliant minds in the world converse about today’s biggest trends and challenges.

According to a study by Triton Digital, nearly one quarter of Americans listen to a podcast at least once a month. Education is a popular subject, with 40% of podcast listeners tuning in to that type. If you’re an HR professional or business leader looking to broaden your knowledge of HR and HR technology this year, I highly recommend filling your ears and brains with these five podcasts throughout ’18.

1. HBR IdeaCast

From Harvard Business Review, the weekly HBR IdeaCast features leading thinkers in business and management discussing a variety of key topics in the work world.

It is an excellent resource for insights on a wide array of subjects including, but not limited to, HR. The discussions apply directly to organizations nationwide. The podcast reminds me of NPR’s Fresh Air, but with an emphasis on business leaders.

From the UK’s Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, the monthly CIPD podcast covers everything from talent acquisition to workplace training and cybersecurity.

Deadline Extended

Employer Deadline Extended for Furnishing 2017 ACA Forms

Distribution of 2017 Affordable Care Act (ACA) Forms 1095-B or -C to your employees has been extended.

As issued in Notice 2018-06, the IRS has extended the deadline from Jan. 31 to March 2. (However, the deadline to provide Forms W-2 and 1099 to employees and contract workers remains as Jan. 31.)

Filing deadlines unchanged

While the deadline to furnish forms was extended, the filing deadlines remain the same: Feb. 28 for paper forms, and April 2 for electronic forms.

IRS Notice 2018-06 emphasizes that employers who do not comply with the due dates for furnishing or filing are subject to penalties under sections 6722 or 6721.

Good-faith transition relief extended

The IRS also announced the extension of good-faith transition relief. This may allow an employer to avoid some penalties if it can show that it made good-faith efforts to comply with the information reporting requirements for 2017.

This relief applies only to incorrect and incomplete information reported on the ACA forms, and not to a failure to file or furnish the forms in a timely manner. Additionally, the IRS stated it does not anticipate extending either the good-faith transition relief or the furnishing deadline in future years.
