3 Tips to Rock a Video Interview

According to, video interviewing has increased 49 percent since 2011. As video interviews gain traction and become a bigger part of more streamlined interview processes, learning the proper etiquette can help you prepare and get the most out of this new step.

Don’t treat it differently than an in-person interview. Many employers will prepare you for the video interview as if it were an onsite interview. Because to them, it is an equally important step to getting to know who you are. Don’t downplay the process; make sure you are dressed properly, your body language is positive and test the equipment and internet connection you’ll be using prior to interview time. Don’t forget to clean the camera lens to avoid a low image quality, and check your battery life too. The slightest mishap could leave your future employer with a bad taste in their mouth.

Here are three tips to help prepare you for your next video interview:

Dress properly. Just like in an on-site interview, dressing the part is imperative. If you’re considering dressing business on top and casual on the bottom, don’t do it! There is always the chance you’ll shift in your seat and reveal your flannel pajamas. Avoid this fiasco by wearing a full suit with a neutral shirt or tie. Plan ahead so you look your absolute best.

Be conscious of your body language and surroundings. Even though you aren’t physically in front of the interviewer, your body language can still speak volumes. Active listening will help you achieve a more positive vibe. You should also pay attention to the following:Nod your head periodically, this shows you are engaged in the conversation.

–Look at the camera, not the screen. Also, maintain eye contact this radiates confidence and demonstrates you’re interested in what they are saying.

–Sit up straight. The change in posture will help you feel more confident and invested.

–Adjust your camera to the proper framing for your face. You don’t want the hiring manager to see half of your face or an unflattering angle. So, ensure the camera shows mid-torso to just the top  of your head.

–Check out your surroundings. Is the lighting at your desk dim or too bright and full of dirty laundry behind you? Maybe move to the kitchen table instead where the lighting is more suitable and      there is a wall with a nice picture.

–Sit still in a chair that does not spin or rock. Fidgeting not only shows how nervous you are, but can overshadow your audio. You want the interviewer to be able to hear you nice and clear.

Commit fully to the interview. Yes, you have accepted the interview, blocked out time and are dressed the part. Being fully committed means you eliminate all distractions, like in a real interview. You wouldn’t be texting, messaging a friend, petting your cat or surfing the internet if you were in a face-to-face interview, so be courteous of the person on the other end of the camera by giving them your complete attention.

Video interviewing may be intimidating, but it’s a great opportunity to showcase your skills to a potential employer in a more comfortable environment. If you can sell them during this interview you will get the in-person interview then potentially the job you desire.
