Employee Spotlight: Meet Jessica

Bonny Calfy | May 12, 2016

Jessica is the director of sales training and has been a part of the Paycom family since September 2011.

When asked to describe her job, she said, “I’m the director of sales training. As a learning executive, my role is focused on development through specialized training that helps employees strengthen their skillset and knowledge base. I run development for our junior executive program, sales new hires and continuous education. Part of my role also includes heavy collaboration with other departments on project and idea generation.”

Jessica M.What advice would you give a new employee for being successful at Paycom?

Take every opportunity. Every day you are given opportunities to become great. If you’re in a training and the question “Are there any volunteers?” goes out, take it! That’s your opportunity to shine. If you’re asked to move for Paycom, do it! That’s your opportunity to grow. If you’re asked to take on a tough task, take it! That’s your opportunity to create value. Opportunities don’t always look like gold, in-fact they may require sacrifice and going out of your comfort zone-but if you have the right attitude, you will go far.

What’s the one word you would choose to describe Paycom, and why?

Gratitude. Our attitude of gratitude is both powerful and infectious! Learning to be grateful usually starts at home when we are young, but rarely is it expanded or endorsed by a company. Too many companies in America play the blame game but at Paycom it’s the complete opposite. With respect to my professional development, leaders like Lara Irvin, Chris Dingess, Stacey Pezold and Jeff York have taught me to be grateful for both the good that comes to us and the challenges we face. We truly have a beautiful culture and I’m incredibly grateful to every leader and peer who has ever invested in me.

What is one thing you have learned that you did not know before working at Paycom?

Value creation. I completely credit who I am as a professional and things I’ve been able to accomplish to the leaders I mentioned earlier. When I was a sales rep straight out of college, I learned about value creation from Lara and Chris. They taught me how to think like an executive and create value for businesses.

And now as the director of sales training, I’ve learned how to create internal value primarily through watching the example of excellence Jeff and Stacey set every day.

Where has been your favorite place to travel?

I’ve had the chance to meet with so many of our sales offices across the nation, but this past President’s Club in Laguna Beach truly was incredible! I experienced some remarkable activities like whale/dolphin watching and touring Los Angeles on the TMZ bus. I really love how Paycom rewards top performers! On a personal level, I’m looking forward to going to the Amalfi Coast next year.

JessCooperDo you have any pets? If so, what kind?

Yes! Everyone knows about my dog, Cooper. We’re all kind of obsessed with how handsome he is, and his amazing life and travels. He’s an English cream golden retriever and he brings so much joy to me as well as anyone he meets. He’s very goofy and fun to have around.

What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of work?

Interior design. I could spend hours in Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn to decorate my home or help my friends with theirs. There is definitely a builder/architect trait to me, so I love seeing something go from nothing to spectacular.

If you could pick anyone in the world to have lunch with, who would it be and why?

I have to pick two! Andy Cohen and Ellen DeGeneres. I don’t watch a lot of TV, but whenever I watch these two I can sense their joy. I think the three of us would have a great lunch filled with goofy moments and laughter. In fact, if anyone knows them, tell them I can do lunch next week, Thursday or Friday at noon. Which time works best? Probably only sales people will get that last part!
