The Historical Recurrence of the WOTC Hiatus
Times are changing, especially in the case of one of America’s staple tax credits, known as the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC). Since its inception in 1983 under a variety of different titles and officially pegged as WOTC in 1996, the federal tax credit has been modified and extended numerous times, including going on hiatus. Its last break was from Jan. 2, 2012, to Jan. 2, 2013, but it has expired yet again as we start 2014.

Is 30 the New 40?
In the scope of basic math, the difference between 30 and 40 isn’t much. The continuing battle over the Affordable Care Act (ACA), however, is anything but basic. Currently at stake in the U.S. House of Representatives is the definition of a full-time employee. Whereas most federal labor laws equate a 40-hour workweek to full-time employment, the ACA definition lowers that to 30.
Government’s E-Verify Services Reopen
For employers who received a Tentative Nonconfirmation for employees between Sept. 17 and Sept. 30, and were unable to resolve it due to the shutdown, the employees will have 12 federal business days added to the date printed on the “Referral Letter” or “Referral Date Confirmation” to resolve such cases. Employees have until that date to contact the Social Security Administration or the Department of Homeland Security to resolve their cases.
