The Importance of Year-End Self-Reviews

Ashley DeGroot | December 14, 2022

With packed social schedules and year-end obligations, December is a busy month. With so much going on, it can be easy to forget the career goals you set at the start of the calendar.

That’s why it’s a good idea to reflect on your progress at the end of the year, just as managers and supervisors review their employees’ performance.

What is a year-end self-review?

A year-end self-review is different from a self-assessment you may do as part of a performance review. Instead of filling out a form or rating your progress in areas that need improvement, a self-review (or self-evaluation) involves honest self-reflection.

This can be as simple as:

  • listing your achievements
  • identifying weaknesses
  • deciding where to focus improvement efforts

As 2022 draws to a close, taking the time to do this now allows you to chart a course for continued career growth throughout 2023.

Your accomplishments

Look back on your career achievements this year, from completing a major project to strengthening soft skills like public speaking.

Search your inbox or project management software if needed to jog your memory. If you don’t already, it helps to document your goals for easy retrieval month to month.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What was my biggest accomplishment this year?
  • What am I proud of?
  • Positive or negative, what feedback have I continuously been given?

Your challenges

Think about what held you back. Were your 2022 goals realistic? Were the obstacles you faced within your control?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What prevented me from reaching my full potential this year?
  • What challenges did I face?
  • When did I lose sight of my career goals?

Your objectives

Before setting your objectives for the next year, consider whether you want to continue working toward existing goals or develop new ones. Keep in mind the challenges you faced, and focus on things you can accomplish personally.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • At this time next year, where do I want to be in my career?
  • What will I do differently in the upcoming year?
  • What are my dreams for next year?

Self-reviews or evaluations may seem intimidating, but they can improve your work ethic, and setting attainable goals can accelerate your career. The ability to continuously learn in the workplace allows you to grow personally and professionally.
