Self-service HR tech helps boost engagement, reduce compliance risks and empower HR professionals to be true strategic leaders. But are businesses making the most out of it?

In 2017, we partnered with HR.com to learn how organizations are using — or not using — employee self-service software. But the world has changed since then, pushing many Americans closer to their HR tech than ever before. That’s why we’ve collaborated with HR.com again in 2022!

Together, we surveyed 250 HR professionals from nearly every industry and business size to gauge the evolving impact of self-service HR tech.

How is HR using employee self-service software?

Today, almost every business uses some form of self-service HR tech. In fact, a large majority of HR professionals agree it’s the best way for employees to receive and provide payroll and HR information. Despite this trend, few businesses are using self-service software to the fullest.

More than 1 in 3 HR professionals say even though they offer a self-service option, HR enters 80% or more of all employee data. But a mere 29% claim they enter 30% or less of this data. The top three objections to using self-service HR tech include concerns over:

  • accuracy of employee-entered data
  • employees’ ability to use their software
  • lack of access to computers/tablets/smartphones

But businesses that fully embrace self-service functionality report significant gains in engagement, efficiency and trust within their workplace culture.

What are the opportunities for employee self-service software?

While employees are using self-service HR software regularly, only a few businesses have fully embraced it. Many HR professionals still see a greater potential for the tech in:

  • development
  • access
  • communication

An overwhelming majority of respondents also say employee self-service software is at its best when it’s easy to use (85%) and convenient (82%). The data suggests more employees expect the same ease and quality they enjoy as consumers in their workplace technology.
