Celebrating Hispanic Voices in the Workplace

Abraham Mendieta | September 29, 2022

At Paycom, we strive to celebrate our diverse workplace and our colleagues for us to better understand and foster respect for each unique background. As the largest minority in the United States, Hispanic Americans have stories and experiences worth celebrating, as they form part of our country’s history.

With over 40 countries represented in National Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s important we find opportunities for us to educate ourselves and celebrate Hispanic heritage every day. Whether through food, language, music or getting to know our colleagues, these help us honor influential contributions and the impact of Hispanic Americans daily.

As National Hispanic Heritage Month continues through Oct. 15, we asked Hispanic American members of the Paycom family what this time of celebration means to them, how it relates to their careers and how to continue learning about their heritage year-round, in and outside the workplace.

Why is celebrating Hispanic heritage important?

“For the longest time, Oklahoma wasn’t known for having a strong Hispanic population. Hispanic Heritage Month makes us more visible while allowing us to share our customs, culture and food! This, in turn, allows for more acceptance and understanding.”
—Damian, team leader of network infrastructure

“It reminds us of those who blazed a path and educates people on the unique challenges and triumphs of the Hispanic community.”
—Natalie, benefits coordinator

“Because I get to celebrate my culture and identity! As a first-generation Mexican American, it’s important to keep my culture alive everywhere I go. My heritage is a huge part of who I am; I let it shine through me in everything I do.”
—Maria, benefits coordinator

“It empowers us to keep Hispanic culture alive. And it gives us the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of Hispanic individuals who support our development as a nation.”
—Nathalie, scrum master

As a Hispanic American, what makes you proud to work at Paycom?

“Paycom, in my eyes, is the best place to work, no question. I’m a first-generation Hispanic in the U.S. and am part of the best workplace. I see endless possibilities at Paycom. I’m proud to work at a place that doesn’t see me as an outcast, but as an asset to any team.”
—Damian, team leader of network infrastructure

“I’m proud to work at Paycom because my co-workers embrace my identity. They create an inclusive environment for me to be myself and contribute to something bigger. I get to pursue the opportunities my parents created for me.”
—Maria, benefits coordinator

“Paycom empowers me to take part in the development of my community in the tech industry.”
—Nathalie, scrum master

How do you celebrate and embrace your heritage in the workplace?

“I talk to my co-workers about our music, food and celebrations, along with the purpose behind them. I also bring our culture’s food from time to time for everyone to enjoy. And I teach others Spanish, which is very fun and helps champion our heritage even more.”
—Damian, team leader of network infrastructure

“I share my heritage within my team, and they celebrate it. I make connections with peers around me that also embrace their culture. We learn from each other. Diversity and inclusion in the workplace is something that should be cherished, as it creates a healthy, well-rounded environment.”
—Maria, benefits coordinator

“I celebrate my heritage by embracing and leveraging my bilingual skills for the advancement of the company. I’m able to work on projects that require Spanish translations, use my experience in bilingual process improvement and provide insight into the Hispanic culture. I’m glad Paycom recognizes the importance of reaching new markets where we can offer our products and services in Spanish.”
—Nathalie, scrum master

How can we continue learning about Hispanic heritage year-round?

“The easiest way to learn about our heritage is to make friends with someone who’s Hispanic. We love to share, show and teach what we are all about! Just have an open mind to our customs, culture and food.”
—Damian, team leader of network infrastructure

“Being mindful of the fact that Hispanic people achieve and accomplish things every day. Understand history and don’t be shy about sharing that information with others in a considerate way.”
—Natalie, benefits coordinator

“Learning about a new culture is a beautiful thing. We are the largest minority group in the U.S. There are many communities who accept people wanting to learn more and appreciate Hispanic culture.”
—Maria, benefits coordinator

“Be open to learning about cultural differences and host company events all year-round that highlight remarkable moments of the Hispanic community. And continuously hire a diverse workforce so that cultural awareness is always present in the workplace.”
—Nathalie, scrum master

Why would you recommend working at Paycom?

“I love that Paycom gives me real career progression. I’ve worked in other companies that tell you advancement is part of their culture, but they really just tug you along with very little pay. I know for a fact that if you work hard at Paycom, the sky is the limit.”
—Damian, team leader of network infrastructure

“Paycom constantly inspires us to reach higher. It’s also a good work environment that encourages a healthy work-life balance.”
—Natalie, benefits coordinator

“Paycom gives me the platform to become a well-rounded professional. I work with many different people at many levels, and I’ve never felt like an outsider. I’m embraced and celebrated for all of my accomplishments. Our work is always recognized and shared. This inspires me to continue to grow within my role. The sky’s the limit at Paycom.”
—Maria, benefits coordinator

“Working for a company where your work is meaningful, your voice is heard and you’re constantly challenged is great! It’s even better when you’re empowered to reach your full potential with great benefits and a work-life balance. At Paycom, I’m surrounded by individuals who understand the importance of embracing each other’s differences and perspectives, which leads to better decision-making and innovation.”
—Nathalie, scrum master
