Employee Spotlight: Meet Carlos

Lacey Grim | February 7, 2020

What are the top three things you enjoy most about your role?

The independence while maintaining a strong culture. We are all road warriors, spending most of our days with different people than the last. Even though as client relations representatives (CRRs) we share smaller in-office teams, we find ways to build a culture across the country while still operating at a highly autonomous level.

The variety in our days. Every meeting, we visit different industries, rooms with contrasting personalities and new executive initiatives. We work with unique people in this department, selling solutions people did not know they desperately needed.

The personal growth. This role forces you to think about problems and handle situations in ways you cannot find anywhere else. We face a variety of challenges each day. While difficult, they are all solvable. The nature of our department is not sales; it’s consultative. Our clients come to us with serious concerns, and we help them adapt or we identify an area of improvement. Either way, it challenges us to look at problems differently and find new ways of resolution.

What qualities do you think make you most effective with our clients?

Persistence, creativity, enthusiasm, empathy, professionalism and communication skills.

What has been your proudest moment so far at Paycom?

My first sale. I spent the better part of my first two months in the field with nothing on the board. I was working some smaller deals and a larger half-system solution. I knew the impact it would have on the organization and hoped that, when I put a business case in front of them, it would be a no-brainer. Luckily, I was right.

What is your next career goal, and how is Paycom helping you get there?

My short-term goals are to become an executive CRR before my first anniversary and make President’s Club.

Longer term, I want to be in a leadership position. I’ve always been passionate about developing people; I love that management provides those opportunities while maintaining the excitement of the sales role. I want to be a part of Paycom’s growth, whether that is improving the way we operate in the field, or taking our solutions to the rest of the world.

Paycom is the kind of place where you …

… work hard and are rewarded for it. I experienced more financial freedom in my first six months at Paycom than anywhere else. Paycom gives you the tools to succeed at the job; you just have to make sure you sharpen them. I always know where I stand and what I have to do to take the next step in my career.

What advice would you give to individuals considering a sales career with Paycom?

I would advise them to be open to new challenges. We face new business concerns every day, and you have get creative in order to succeed. Like I mentioned previously, Paycom gives you all the tools; you just have to implement them in a way that fits the scenario.

Where has been your favorite place to travel and why?

My parents and I are immigrants. They brought me to the United States when I was 3 years old. Brazil is beautiful in its own right, and I have most of my extended family there. I mostly visit my home state of Paraná, but I need to branch out and see the rest of the country.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your free time?

In my free time, I try to spend as much time with my family, friends and girlfriend as possible. I go to as many concerts as I can and try mix in a hike here and there.

If you could eat only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

This is a tough one. I would have to go with a simple lobster roll – warm butter, not mayo.
