My Paycom Journey as a New Client Specialist

Bonny Calfy | April 25, 2023

Jake’s Paycom journey is a story about career growth and making the most of new opportunities.

While Jake studied at Oklahoma State University, a friend represented Paycom at the university’s fall career fair. Jake already knew about Paycom’s great reputation, but when he learned more about the organization, he began to see the growth potential Paycom offers.

After graduating with a degree in finance, Jake joined Paycom as a new client specialist (NCS) in summer 2020. He was right about the possibility for growth here. By excelling in his position and offering clients superior service, he rose to the level of senior NCS.

We caught up with Jake to learn about his Paycom journey and being a new client specialist.

What do you do as a Paycom new client specialist?

If you think of the Paycom system as a car, my role is to set up the engine for the client, because the car won’t operate correctly if there isn’t a good engine.

This includes setting up the client’s employee data, time and attendance, earnings and deductions, time-off accruals, general ledger and a whole lot more.

My day to day consists of importing data, setting up Paycom tools, meeting with the client to ensure that we are setting everything up exactly how they want it and offering expertise when the client has questions about how the system operates.

What is your favorite part about being on the NCS team?

My favorite part about being in NCS is the relationships that I’ve created with my peers at the office. My network has grown so much, and there is never a client scenario that I am not able to figure out because there is always someone out there who is going to point me in the right direction. I’ve built lifelong relationships with so many people here, and it’s awesome to be able to see them and interact each day.

What is your favorite #PaycomPerk?

The free on-campus gym. I love playing basketball, and I have met so many people from playing before work, during lunch, after work and even in the Paycom basketball league. It’s incredible that my workplace has brought so much fun into my life.

Having local restaurants cater lunch each day is a close second.

What’s your favorite spot on campus?

The courtyard. It’s nice to go out there and decompress throughout the day. Sunshine is always good for the soul.

What’s one thing — either industry-related or not — you learned in the last month?

I’ve learned a lot about Ohio and Pennsylvania local taxes. It’s amazing how quickly you can pick up on things when you encounter them every day.

What advice do you have for aspiring Paycom employees?

Enjoy every day and work hard. I truly think those are the main two ingredients for being successful in this life. If you’re working hard and you’re enjoying yourself in the process, there’s truly nothing that can stop you.

Jake recognized Paycom’s strong company culture before his Paycom journey began — and he’s not the only one! This year, Paycom received a Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award and was one of only 57 companies honored worldwide.
