Employee Spotlight: Meet Joe

Bonny Calfy | July 9, 2020

We interviewed one of our sales managers, Joe, to learn more about his Paycom journey.

How did you get your start at Paycom?

My career at Paycom started in 2016 during my senior year of college. I accepted the challenge of Paycom’s internship program in our Orange County office. I spent my senior year interning for Lauren O. and the Orange County team and then accepted the full-time sales position immediately following my graduation from Chapman University. One year into the job, I was promoted to an Executive Sales Rep and am now managing our team here in Sacramento.

What is your favorite thing about your sales office?

The best part of our Sacramento office is our team. Not just the comradery of our sales staff, but our transition specialist representatives and account executive groups as well. We take our teamwork and competitiveness outside to the baseball diamonds and football fields of Sacramento in a couple of recreational sports leagues.

What are the top three things you enjoy most about your role?

  1. I got into management because I wanted to do what Lauren did for me in Orange County – change the professional life of the people on my team. She was a great mentor and leader for our office and I owe much of what I have accomplished in my personal and professional life to her coaching and mentoring. 2. The managers in my region. We have some of the most incredible leaders in the Mountain Region and I am very thankful to be able to learn from them every single day. 3. Learning about all different kinds of businesses and the economic, social and financial challenges they face every day. I love learning about different industries and understanding the part they play in our community’s business ecosystem.

What’s the one word you would choose to describe Paycom, and why?

“Apex.” Paycom hires apex sales reps to sell the absolute best technology in our industry.

What advice would you give to individuals considering a sales career with Paycom?

Write down your one-, three- and five-year professional goals before your interview and then share that with your recruiter and the sales manager. Allowing both parties to firmly understand what our candidates want in a career will elevate the conversation and create a much deeper dialogue around a career with Paycom vs. a sales job.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your free time?

Snowboarding and downhill mountain biking. Even though I was born and raised in Southern California, where people think it doesn’t snow, growing up you could find me on the nearest snowy mountain from opening day to closing. Lake Tahoe is not far from downtown Sacramento so if you are looking for me on a Saturday or Sunday, there is a good chance I am flying down the resorts on a board or bike.=

If you could eat only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

In-N-Out Burger. There are some skeptics out there, but I firmly believe In-N-Out Burger has the best burgers fries, and shakes in the world (I could have a bias being from SoCal, but I’m sure there are some more supporters out there!).
