Leadership Spotlight: Meet Matt

Bonny Calfy | March 12, 2021

We interviewed one of our sales managers, Matt, to learn more about his Paycom journey.

How did you get your start at Paycom?

I made friends with the Cleveland sales manager when we were both living in Seattle. All I kept hearing was how awesome Paycom was and how it could literally change your life. I was considering doing something different, and he and another co-worker of his convinced me to give Paycom a try. The rest, as they say, is history.

What is your favorite thing about your sales office?

We are building a really great team. Everyone gets along, and it’s starting to feel like a family. We pick each other up when we’re down and cheer for each other during successes. We like to keep things light and have fun together. We love to jump on video chats and play games together. For me, my favorite thing about Paycom is the people and the relationships that have come from that. So really, my focus is on replicating that for my team.

What are the top three things you enjoy most about your role?

First, the people. I got into management to help others, not just to advance my own career. Watching people chase their goals and getting to play a role in that is my favorite thing about management. Second, I absolutely love selling. Having the opportunity to focus my time and effort on bringing the best technology around to a market really fires me up. We get to change not only our own lives, but the lives of our clients. That’s what motivates me every day: knowing that we’re truly helping people. Finally, I love the challenge. I’ve never been pushed or challenged like I have since becoming a manager. Every day, there’s a chance to solve problems, and that keeps things fun.

What’s the one word you would choose to describe Paycom and why?

Excellence. In everything we do, we’re chasing excellence. Our people embody excellence. From our sales force to our home office, everyone is the best at what they do. We are all singularly focused on fundamentally changing an industry, which as our chief sales officer always says, only happens a few times in a generation.

What advice would you give to individuals considering a sales career with Paycom?

Commit to it and give it everything you have. When I was hired, my manager told me, “Put your head down and run. Don’t look up until you’re where you want to be.” To this day, I’m still running. Yet when I take a step back and look at what I’ve accomplished so far, I’ve done more in my time at Paycom than I did in my career before joining Paycom. Our sales force is the big leagues of professional selling, but you can make your dreams come true if you stay focused on your why and do your very best every single day.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your free time?

I am a big cycling guy. I love workout classes, rock climbing and putting in hours on my Peloton. Outside that, I enjoy sports, craft beer and hanging out with my wife Jaclyn and golden retrievers, Griffey and Ruthie.

If you could eat only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

This is tough. I’d have to say burritos. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. What other food item could you have for every meal with so much variety?
